Coming along nicely

Today we rolled our green for the second time, in preparation for the new season. A big thank you to all who put their backs into pulling the roller.

A further rolling session is planned for Friday, 2nd March; all helpers welcome.

In the meantime, here is a photo of a very lush looking green following today’s roll.

Camberley vs Merrow

On Sunday, 28th January Merrow travelled to Camberley IBC for our annual fixture. Merrow had a good turnout, with fifteen members playing five rinks of triples.

We received a very warm welcome from the Camberley players, unfortunately that did not translate into letting us win! However, we did win on one rink, so hearty congratulations to David E, Andy K, and Lorna R who fought hard for their victory.

The afternoon was rounded off with a delicious roast dinner; just what we needed!

Next up is our match against  Burpham at Wey Valley on Sunday, 18th February. We currently have sufficient members to field six rinks of triples. If you aren’t down to play, why not come along to cheer us on.

If you would like copies of the photos, please contact David on merrowbowls@gmail.com

Happy New Year

Here at Merrow Village Bowls Club, we hope you all had lovely Christmas and New Year celebrations.

I’d just like to remind you of our next indoor match at Camberley, on 28th January. If you can play but haven’t put your name down, please contact Rodney Morrison.

Happy bowling!

Mole Valley indoor match

On Wednesday, 29th November, Merrow players travelled to Leatherhead for a match of four rinks against Mole Valley IBC.

We managed to raise sixteen players for the match, with some not having played indoors before.

Unfortunately, we faced very strong opposition. The Mole Valley club is similar to Wey Valley, and draws its members from a number of outdoor clubs in the local area. Merrow did put in a spirited performance but were ultimately overwhelmed by a much stronger opposition.

However, we look forward to our next two matches against Burpham and Camberley.

First indoor fixture looming

On Wednesday 29th November, we travel to Leatherhead for our first indoor match of the Winter against Mole Valley.

As several of our members now play at Wey Valley, we’ll know what to expect and hopefully, give a good account of ourselves.

If you want to play, but haven’t put your name down, do please contact Brian Taylor.

Good luck everyone!

AGM update

A big thank you to all who came along to the AGM last night. I hope you gained an insight into how the club operates.

David Matthews made a request for new committee members, both for the bowls and village club. If you can spare one hour per month (maximum), we would love your help to run the club.

Presentation lunch

On Sunday, 22nd October, our annual Presentation Lunch was held at the Masonic Hall. We had a good turnout but, sadly, several members were unable to attend due to ill health and work committments.

A fine lunch was provided by Vic and his team, during which we all had a stab at Tony Cekys’ quiz, which caused much head scratching.

Once lunch had finished, and the quiz answers and results revealed, we moved onto the presentations. These were hosted by David Matthews, with Tony Oldland making the presentations. Photos of the presentations can be seen at the end of this post. As you’ll see, flowers were presented to Jean Boxall for her continuing help with the teas at home matches.

Following the presentations, the raffle was drawn, with everyone hoping for a winning ticket, with much cheering and applause when a winning ticket was drawn.

A good time was had by all, and we look forward to next year’s lunch, which will be held on 21st October 2018, at the Masonic Hall.

Finally, a big thank you to David Matthews, who takes on so much for the club, including the organisation of this lunch.
