On Sunday 19th February, Merrow played hosts Burpham at Way Valley Indoor Bowls centre.

Mole Valley Result
On a cold November afternoon, it was a good day to be playing an indoor bowls match. Mole Valley were our hosts and very kindly loaned Merrow three players to make up our numbers.
We played on four rinks, with good performances on each rink. The match ran out as a draw on rinks (two each) but a very strong team on rink two resulted in a high score by Mole Valley, meaning that Merrow lost by around forty points overall. However, that did not detract from a very enjoyable afternoon and we look forward to returning next year.
Mole Valley indoors
Wednesday November 30th sees Merrow heading over to Leatherhead for our annual indoor fixture against Mole Valley. With several members new to long mat bowls it will be interesting to see how we get on.
Guildford Dragon
A brief “thank you” to David Rose and the Guildford Dragon for reporting our Presentation Lunch.
Club Presentation Lunch
Sunday, 23 October saw Merrow Village Bowls Club host its annual presentation lunch at Weybourne House.
A delicious lunch was enjoyed by club members and their guests, with a very jolly atmosphere and splendid catering by the Weybourne House team. Lunch was followed by the presentation of prizes to club members, with special gifts being made to the ladies who help with the teas at home matches and at the jumble sales.
Several members won more than one competition; e.g. Bob Carey, David Ewins, Sue Reigate, Rodney Morrison, and Calvin Haggis. Congratulations to them and to all other prize winners. A new Novices trophy was won by David Ewins, to be known as the Derek Oliver Cup, in memory of our late coach and committed member.
The afternoon concluded with a quiz and a raffle.
Well done to everyone involved in the organisation!

Dig for Britain!
Not so much planting potatoes as removing rye grass.
On Saturday, a group of club members got down on their knees to dig out at least some of the rye grass that has invaded our bowls green.
We were fortunate to have a dry day until 3pm, when the heavens opened and maintenance work was abandoned. The areas worked on were seeded and a top dressing applied. Hopefully, the temperatures will stay high enough for the seed to germinate before Winter sets in.
Thanks go to Rodney for organising the day and to the following for getting their hands dirty: Robin, Richard, David E, David and Mo, Ken, Lorna and me, David R, not forgetting Rodney of course.
A second session is planned for Saturday 22nd., so if you can spare a couple of hours, do come along.
A good day for jumble
Following hectic setting-up activity on Friday evening, Saturday dawned bright and sunny ready for our Autumn jumble sale. Unfortunately, the good weather was soon replaced by heavy showers.
Our early buyers were in action as soon as we released them, with the normal entries coming in at 10am for a good old rummage round. This sale saw a large number of items for sale, from small vases to PC monitors, pushchairs and even a steam generator ironing board! As usual, we also had a really good selection of books and toys.
It is always great fun selling to the public at these events; a lot of jokiness is in evidence and people are usually generous with their donations to our club. It was also an opportunity to promote the club to prospective members with a view to the next Open Day.
The calm before the storm. All set up and ready to go.

Be sure to support our next jumble sale in the Spring.
Don’t forget!
It’s the club’s jumble sale on Saturday. Bring along any donations on Friday at 10pm or Saturday at 8am.
Doors open at 10am, entry is 50p.

Hard work on the green
Following our last outdoor match, we began work on the green to get it into good condition for the next season.
A lot of effort has to go into the green maintenance and we were fortunate to have six people turn up on Sunday 18th to help with the work. A busy morning resulted in a great deal of clearing up and green maintenance, which continued on Monday.
We look forward to a much improved green for next season.
