Weekend Friendlies

We had two friendlies over the weekend of 30th April – 1st May.

On Saturday, we travelled to the Pippbrook club in Dorking. Our team were four players short, so Pippbrook kindly let four of their players join us for the afternoon. It was a pleasant afternoon, spoilt only by a brief rain shower during ends eight and nine. However, the sun soon returned and Merrow went on to record a seven shot win.

Sunday’s match was against Albury. A warm sunny day was in prospect; quite a change from the recent cold and wet days. There were mixed fortunes, with both wins and losses across the four rinks, but the end result was a well deserved draw.

Open Day – Sunday, 8th May

Merrow Village Bowling Club would like to invite you to “Come and play bowls” at their special “PLAY BOWLS DAY”  on  Sunday 8th May at their green, behind the Merrow Village Hall and Social Club, on the Epsom Road at Merrow.  Members and the club coaches will be on hand from  10-12am and 2-4pm to welcome both existing bowlers and those who have not tried the game before, but who would like to have a go.  The sessions are free and can be followed by a course of four further sessions at times to suit you in the following days or weeks.  The club are particularly keen to encourage new lady bowlers to join their existing ladies group.

Why not come along,  make new friends and find out that there is much more to the game than you may have thought. The club stress that enjoyment of the game is the main aim, and play friendly matches at weekends throughout the summer, against other local clubs.

REGAL FUN AT LIPHOOK

For our away match at Liphook on 24th April we were invited by the home side to join them in their celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday, and the whole afternoon took on a street party atmosphere. Players were regally turned out in varieties of red, white and blue attire, and one of our rinks even had red and blue bowls for the day. An enjoyable game was had, with the home side just pipping us by 6 shots, and we finished with a very enjoyable tea in the welcome warmth of the clubhouse on what was a really chilly afternoon.  Well done to Liphook for putting on such a splendid and enjoyable afternoon.

STARTING WITH A WIN –BUT ONLY JUST

The club’s first home match on Saturday 23rd April against Ottershaw saw both teams with slightly depleted sides due to early season absences, resulting in a game of 2 triples and 1 rink versus a triple  ( 9 players against 10) .  The match was closely fought throughout in chilly but bright conditions on a green which was noticeably getting faster as it was being played on and by the end just starting to take more turn.  Merrow welcomed 2 new members playing their first games for the club, Debbie and David Ewins, who appeared to enjoy themselves despite the cold.   At the finish it was the home side who got in front just at the right time, but the score–48 shots to 47, reflected just how close the match was.

First club night

First club night

We had our first club night on Thursday. Six of us turned up for some coaching with Rodney Morrison, who laid on an amusing game for us all. Two teams, one at each end playing to a jack. This meant there were two jacks on the rink and we were all bowling towards each other! The last person to play in each team had to move the opposition bowls away from the jack (some devious tactics came into play!) and we were scored on how close our bowls were to our own jack.

Great fun and good for developing our accuracy.

If I recall correctly most of the “devious tactics” came from the person who wrote this article!!!!
